Question:

Mongolian spots (bluish, green spots) on baby's body?

I have a ten month old baby that has a lot of birthmarks. He has a strawberry mark on his forehead, two big mongolian marks on his buttocks and back and the other day my husband cut his hair short and we noticed he has about three big ones on his head.

I heard it's normal for some babies to have them in any part of their body and that they fade as the child gets older. But I was wondering is anybody out there had a baby with the same marks and if they did go away. Thanks in advance.

  1. Mongolian spots are normal and can be found anywhere on the body. That said you need to document the ones he has well and watch him well as they don't just keep turning up. If you do keep seeing more spots it is something else and you need to have him checked out. It is very hard to tell them from bruising sometimes, and if you take him to the DR and these are not documented the may refer you to Child Protective Services. You can photograph them or make a body diagram of him marking on it where they are and measure their sizes.

  2. my son has a huge mongolian spot that covers the entirety of his buttocks and he has a white splash across his stomach, a white splash on his foot, and one white dot on his side.  I am interested in knowing where these marks come from.  my son's butt mark is starting to fade but not the white splashes

EDIT* I just found out that these spots are most prevalent in East Asian babies, East African babies such as Ethiopian, Native Americans, and Hungarians.  Does your baby have any of these ethnicities mixed with him or her?  Or perhaps you or daddy?

  3. i just heard about these mongolian spots last night when i went to a baby class and the teacher said they always go away around a year of age give or take a few months.

  4. My son has a few mongolian spots on his butt. It looks like I spank him...but I dont. My doctor said they should go away by purberty. They do seem to be getting darker. They will cause no harm
