Monisha Kaltenborn not worried by Sauber’s Monaco GP form – Formula 1 news
Monisha Kaltenborn has claimed that Sauber’s lacklustre performance in the Monaco GP was a one-off and the team will bounce back strongly in the upcoming event in Canada.
Both the Sauber drivers failed to make an impact in the previous round and finished outside the points. Nico Hulkenberg was looking good to bag one championship point, but he ended up losing his place to Lotus’ Kimi Raikkonen, who came charging on his fresh
tyres in the final lap.
On the other hand, Esteban Gutierrez also did not have any luck and he had to settle for 13th place overall. The rookie would have been pleased to some extent though, as he had started the race from 19th on the grid and made up quite a few places in the
end.
Despite that decent effort from the Mexican driver, there were no gains for the team, which had impressed one and all during the previous season.
However, Kaltenborn stated, “We cannot take this race to measure the progress that we have made; this race is very special. But what's very important is that what we implemented in Barcelona was a good step ahead. It wasn't very big but we knew it wasn't
going to be extremely big, but it was a good step.”
The Sauber team principal realises the real problem though and said, “Clearly it's not beneficial to it because we would like to put more resources on real performance development instead of trying to overcome issues to be where we should have been from
the beginning. So that's not good, but it's the situation we are in.”
Last year, there were only a few teams, which managed the Pirelli tyres well and Sauber was one of them. As a result, the team was able to fight for podiums against the best in the business and scored some solid points throughout the year. They ended up
sixth overall and almost managed to defeat Mercedes in the Constructor’s Championship.
Things have changed dramatically for the Ferrari powered outfit this year, as they have just scored five points out of six races and are down in eighth place behind Toro Rosso, who have got 12 points.
