Monisha Kaltenborn thinks Sauber need to keep a close eye on Esteban Gutierrez – Formula 1 news
Sauber team principal, Monisha Kaltenborn has said that they need to keep a very close eye on their new driver, Esteban Gutierrez who is racing in his first ever Formula 1 season.
Gutierrez managed to secure a race seat at the Swiss squad for this season after serving as their reserve driver during the last year. He is driving alongside one of the most talented drivers in the sport, Nico Hulkenberg who drove impressively well with
Force India during the preceding season. However, he has been completely outperformed by his teammate in the first four races of the season and has not been able to score even a single point.
Although, Monisha said that they still need to do a lot of work on their car. But, she asserted that they need to take special care of the Mexican driver who has not been able to come up to their expectations in his first season until now.
“A lot has to do with the performance of the car, so you have to be careful not to start making assessments after four races, but yes, we have to keep a very close eye on him and see if the expectations are satisfied or not,” Kaltenborn told Autosport.
Besides, she stated that they have full confidence in the abilities of the 21-year-old who is currently struggling with his pace. In addition, she insisted that they will try their best to get the potential out of the young driver so that he can attain better
results for his team.
“We have no doubts about his mental capabilities to get on top of things and understand them, but he is struggling at the moment with his performance. So we need to try to focus on get that potential out because we know it's there,” she added.
It is to be note that Gutierrez was even penalised because of his crash with Adrian Sutil of Force India in the Chinese GP. But, he has received full support from his team despite his struggling start.
Let’s see whether he will be able to prove his potential in the season ahead or not.
