Monitor goes black - green light stays on. The picture is perfect when the screen is on, but it

The picture is perfect when the screen is on, but it goes black very shortly after startup, and sometimes goes back on and off in no apparent pattern. Sometimes I can manipulate it back on for good by turning the system on and off a few times but it is very unreliable. Any clue as to why this occurs and how it may be fixed??
