Monkspath Muscat takes the right path to victory at Perry Barr
The path to victory in any kind of race is not always an easy one to follow. There are obstacles to overcome, many twists and turns, and other competitors. The Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium
in Birmingham is a place where the 480m path to victory is seldom easy to follow, as the leader has to contend with five other dogs and a variety of other anomalies.
Monkspath Muscat (5-1), however, did manage to find the right path to victory in the A6 race that began an exciting day at the races. He crowded the run up, but led at the quarter mark
and held on to lay claim on first place in 29.53 seconds. Finishing only a shoulder’s length behind Monkspath Muscat was 11-2 long shot Drumscraw Des, who lacked an early pace, but challenged the run in to match the winning time of 29.53. Citizen Torres, the
7-4 favourite, placed third in 29.73. He finished behind second place by a distance of 2½ lengths.
The number four spot went to another member of the Monkspath pedigree. Monkspath Monza (7-1) moved slowly away from the pack, and challenged third and fourth on the way to a 29.74 finish.
He missed out on a top-three finish by a shoulder. Fifth place went to Fredom Piggott (3-1) missed a break, which resulted in a 29.84 finish that was 1¼ lengths behind Monkspath Monza. Neruda (7-2) crowded the run up, but finished 2 lengths behind fifth place
with a time of 30.00.
The A4 race that followed featured a close win from Kilos Little Man (7-2). A bounding start from trap six allowed him to lead third en route to a 29.18 finish that gave him the win. Movealong
Story, the 9-4 favourite didn’t get the happy ending she was looking for, but settled for a second-place finish. Her time of 29.22 was just a ½ lengths behind Kilos Little Man. Rounding out the top three was Big Nellie (7-2), who ran on to take third place
in 29.30. She was 1 length out of second place.
Forbeterorworse (6-1) lacked an early pace, and finished in fourth place with a time of 29.42 that was 1½ lengths behind third. Cooly Flame (4-1) missed a break, which caused him to lose
2 lengths and finish in 29.58. Bringing up the rear was Black Band (5-1), who was 1½ lengths behind Cooly Flame with her time of 29.70.
Monkspath Muscat proved he was a good pathfinder today, and he’ll get a chance to defend his championship on Friday 15 October, when Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium holds its next evening
of races. The first race gets under way at 19:25.
