Question:

Mono . . . .?

Recently, I've been diagnosed with Mono. According to my Dr., the virus is almost dead in me. Which leads me to believe that I've had it since the winter time. Anyways, since I did not know I had Mono, I drank. I didn't drink in excess, but nevertheless I did consume alcohol. Furthermore, I was told that my liver is a little inflamed and my enzymes are a little high, but nothing to worry about. Since I'm underage, I do not want to ask my Dr. these questions. But could someone provide me with info. concerning alcohol + liver + mono? Please? Oh, and how long should I wait before consuming alcohol again? Please be realistic. Also, had I done damage to it, would that have shown up in my blood work? All they said was that my enzymes were a little abnormal.

  1. Drinking even a little while recovering from mononucleosis can cause liver problems, but from the sounds of it, your drinking may have only inhibited your body's healing process. Drinking in moderation once while recovering from mono probably did not cause any damage; drinking in moderation habitually while recovering from mono most likely did. Any serious damage would have shown up in the blood tests, however; if your enzymes "were a little abnormal" there is probably nothing to worry about. Do not drink anymore, though, until your blood tests come back normal. The tests will indicate when your liver will be able to process the alcohol.

And don't be afraid to ask your doctor! If you are in the United States, HIPAA laws make it illegal for your doctor to disclose any health information to ANYONE (except your parents) without express written consent from you or your parents (if you are under 18). If you are over 18, your doctor cannot disclose any personal health information with even your parents. Also, request your that your doctor not tell your parent/guardian; your doctor will not get you into trouble with your parents or the law. It is important that your doctor know all of your health information to provide better care, whether your parents are aware of it or not! Good luck!

  2. telling your doctor that you drink is not going to get you in prison.  Your life is confidential. The only time your doc will have to open their mouth is if you commit a crime and you end up in court.. and the judge asks for medical proof.

Consumption of alcohol means ou're supplying more uric acid to your liver.. and your liver will works harder to try to burn that acid out.. In Mono, your liver gets inflammed.. so best to avoid alcohol altogether.

Realistically, depending on how bad your case is.. you could probably start drinking again in a year ( I RATHER BE SAFE THAN SORRY) .. but it's pretty much up to you about how you want to handle your own health.

    okay good luck.
