I'm a female and I thought of doing the monologue from the movie, There Will Be Blood. Is it okay for a female to act as a male? And how long should I perform a monologue? Is 1 minute too quick? And when you are performing it, must you always face the audience (judges) or am I allowed to have a person with me and talk to him the whole time...and let him say a few words?

  1. ususally if you act as a guy then and do a great job you will have better chances of getting a role and typically you dont bring someone and plus you should look at the judges but not the whole time

  2. They should have given you their rules... since this is for a school play the rules are probably looser than for other auditions.  Generally it would be 1-2 minutes and it would need to be from a play.  You should not have a scene partner, the whole point of a monolgoue is that you are up there performing alone.  If you find a scene you like and there are a couple of lines that someone else says, you can either eliminate them or change it so that you say them in a way that it makes sense (if the other character says "It's raining out" you could say "I know it's raining out!" or something like that)

As far as acting as a male, it's generally not done unless you are auditioning for a male role or the role can be played as female.  You should be doing  a piece that will show you in the same light as the role you are auditiong for.  It needs to show similar characteristics.

Go to the library and check out some monologue books, that may be your best bet at this point.  Some will be collections of monologues from plays and others will be totally made up monologues.  For a cshool play, either is fine.  All will be a sufficient length so do not worry about that unless they did put out guidelines with a time limit.

    good luck,
