If there are only two players and the player who's landed on the unowned property doesn't want it, how can you possibly auction it as the rules say? Or can the other player have it for £1?

  1. Both players may participate in the auction; so if you are playing with just one other person, you both start bidding from $1. You may end up buying it for less than the printed price, or you may have to let your opponent have it for a pound.

So the choice is to pay full price and guarantee it for yourself, or put it up for auction and maybe get it for cheaper but give your opponent a chance to bid as well.

And DON'T play with the "collect all the fines" house rule. All it does is make the game take longer.

  2. i never bother auctioning places when it's just 2 players. not much point really lol

i just wait till i land on it.  i don't really follow monopoly as the rules say. like when i'm playing in a group and someone gets a fine card or someone lands on the fine spaces on the board we put the fine money in the middle and when someone lands on free parking they get all the money in the middle.  it makes the game more exciting as obviously people want to land on the free parking space.
