  1. Monsoon refers to seasonal wind which flows with consistency and regularity for one part of the year and blows from the other direction for the other part of the year. They bring  lot of rain to the places overwhich they are blowing. Monsoon rains  are generated over different parts of the world due to the difference in response  of land and water to sunlight and the resulting wind movement. Thus the differential heating between the land and water surfaces is the driving force for the monsoon winds. The south-west monsoon(June to September) and north-east monsoon(October to December)blowing over India are typical examples of monsoon winds.

During northern summer the land in the northern hemisphere gets warmed up while the southern hemisphere is cooler as it receives less sunlight.Due to this differential heating, the cooler moist air from the southern hemisphere starts moving towards the hot northern hemisphere. This blows over India as south-west monsoon. The reverse thing happens during north-east monsoon.

The arrival of monsoon(particularly south-west monsoon) in India changes the atmospheric condition  from a state of extreme dryness to high humidity and  rainfall.Thunderstorm is a feature of pre-monsoon months of April and May over North-East India.

There are no different types of monsoons but occur in different parts of the world. All monsoon winds are produced due to the differential heating of the land and sea surfaces. It is similar to land and sea breezes but occurs on a large scale.

The strongest monsoons occur in southern Asia, northern Australia and Africa.

  2. Monsoon basically means a seasonable shift in the prevailing wind direction, which in turn can bring about a change in the prevailing weather.  The Asian monsoon is probably the most well known, where offshore winds change to onshore, and bring in greatly increased air moisture and resultant rains.  The desert southwest of the U.S. also has a pronounced monsoon season, which typically starts about this time of year.
