Question:

Monster HDMI vs "DISH Network" component cables?

I have a 56" Sony Wega 720p with a DISH Network HD-DVR... I was first using the company's cables (component) but my brother bought the 3 ft Ultra Monster HDMI. I love the HDMI sound but the picture quality doesn't look quite as sharp as the component cables did... Could this be caused by the settings on the TV or on the DVR? I just want the best picture quality possible with 720p!

  1. Honestly, you should notice a positive change when using the HDMI cables, as it provides a pure digital signal. I would say the problem lies in the fact that your television is 720p. Such a large screen should really be at a resolution such as 1080i or higher. You're getting the same effect as if you were simply blowing up an image to fit on a larger piece of paper - it stretches itself out and loses quality.

  2. Technically speaking, HDMI should be delivering the most accurate and unaltered picture from your satellite box... being that's it's all digital.  I'm unsure why your picture quality would look worse... particularly in the area of sharpness.  It very well could be some odd setting... unless perhaps when the box outputs via component it adds some artificial sharpening to the image..? Just grasping at straws there.

Technically HDMI should be getting you a better picture. If you had a 1080p tv set and a Blu-Ray or upscale disc player.. most device support 1080p through HDMI only.. and only 1080i through component.  If you wish to provide us with the EXACT model number for your TV and the Dishnetwork box... perhaps we can look them up and recommend any settings you should toy with.
