Monster Yamaha Tech3 rider Cal Crutchlow undergoes successful surgery – MotoGP news
Monster Yamaha Tech3 rider Cal Crutchlow underwent a successful surgery at the Royal Derby Hospital on Wednesday.
The surgery was done to fix Crutchlow’s fractured collarbone that he sustained in a crash during the qualifying round for the AirAsia British Grand Prix.
Crutchlow said, “The operation on my collarbone was a success and the doctors seem really happy with the outcome. But I am still in a lot of pain. Unfortunately, the break is a lot worse than the one my team-mate Colin Edwards had in Catalunya and I've got
different pain and movement levels.”
During the surgery, Crutchlow’s collarbone was fixed by inserting titanium plates and a number of screws to hold his five-point fracture.
The Brit’s operation was delayed due a suspected neck injury. It was formerly assessed that Crutchlow has also fractured his C2 vertebrae. The initial checkups at the John Radcliffe Hospital hinted at a few damages as suspected. Later, detailed check up
and CAT scan cleared all doubts and declared his vertebrae unharmed.
Crutchlow has already initiated his physiotherapy and hopes to get ready for the upcoming seventh MotoGP round in Netherlands. However, it is not clear whether he will race at the Iveco TT Assen Grand Prix or wait for his injury to heal completely.
During the Catalan GP preparations, Crutchlow’s teammate Colin Edwards also faced a bad collarbone fracture which shattered his clavian. Edwards was operated upon and after only a week’s rest, he raced at the British GP and managed a podium finish.
The British rider added, “I've spent two days lying on my back with a suspected neck injury, so my shoulder just got swollen. I am not very happy that this happened to me in my home race at Silverstone when things were going really well for the weekend.
I don't know if I will ride in Assen.”
With big disappointment, Crutchlow had to miss his home ground event. The sole Brit rider in premier class was impressive on his home ground at Silverstone circuit by standing in top six positions in all three free practice sessions.
