Monster Yamaha Tech3 boss Herve Poncharal keen to sign Eugene Laverty for 2012 season – MotoGP news
Monster Yamaha Tech3 Team Boss, Herve Poncharal has declared that there are chances that Eugene Laverty can join Tech3 squad for the 2012 MotoGP season.
During the previous round at Brno, Czech Republic, Laverty met the Tech3 boss and discussed the options for his inclusion in the team. The problem arose when the Yamaha WSBK factory team decided to cut off from World Superbike Championship by the end of
2011.
Poncharal said, “Eugene visited us in Brno and he has a strong interest. I spoke with him last year for Moto2 but he is a strong candidate. He is young and fast and he’s a Yamaha rider at the moment, so that’s also a possibility.”
The Irish rider gets the priority because he is racing for Yamaha’s factory squad in the WSBK and has shown great potential in the championship. Laverty is fourth in the championship points’ table behind former MotoGP rider and teammate at the WSBK series,
Marco Melandri.
Laverty added, “There’s nothing happening any time soon and it really is a waiting game. I wasn’t looking in MotoGP two weeks ago, so that’s all changed and we need to see what the powers that be want. It’s Herve’s decision and his team, so he makes the
final choice on the rider and we will see how that develops.”
In 2010, Laverty was seen engaged in talks with Poncharal to make a place for him in Moto2 class in the Tech3 squad. Now under present situation it is possible that the Irish rider might join Cal Crutchlow in the Tech3 team.
Some other names have also been pronounced that could possibly fall in the Tech3 team for the next season, which includes current racer Colin Edwards, Moto2 riders Andrea Iannone and Bradley Smith.
Laverty has also raced in 250cc category in 2007 and 2008 season. He shared that he was not expecting any update from the Tech3 squad earlier than the Misano round, but the team boss has revealed his likeness. Furthermore, Poncharal will decide the future
of the Tech3 team whether someone stays or there will be a change in 2012.
