Montaser makes successful comeback – Horseracing news
Montaser made a terrific comeback to the sport by winning the Jigsaw Sponsorship Services Stakes (Handicap) at York in England on Friday, June 14, 2013.
Although the four-year-old gelding was out of action for nearly 250 days, he managed to get the attention of the bookies straight away, getting the best odds for winning the class-2 encounter.
The winning trainer David Simcock said about his stallion, “He missed two weeks during the Chester meeting in May, and he was very, very fresh - too fresh. He's not a slow horse and I wouldn't be surprised if we dropped him back in trip at some stage. We'll
probably go for the Northumberland Plate now, but there is question mark about whether he'll stay.”
Looking at the result of the Jigsaw Sponsorship Services Stakes, it seems that Montaser will not have any stamina problems, as he stayed really nicely in his comeback event. He was held up by some of the slower runners in the opening phases of the race,
but that did not stop him from storming to the front.
Once he got the opportunity, he simply increased his speed and took control of the proceedings. No one managed to cause problems for him towards the end, as he comfortably succeeded by one length.
Overall, this was the fourth victory of Montaser’s career. He has appeared in a total of nine races, which shows that he has got a decent strike rate. However, he needs to improve more in order to gain the confidence of the bookies every time he steps out
to race.
On the other hand, Grandorio caused an upset in another event at York, which impressed his camp. His trainer David O’Meara was surprised with the result and said, “He pulled too hard at Musselburgh last time - a bit like Dawn Approach but not of that calibre
of horse. We should maybe have had him in at Royal Ascot as he's good horse, but this has been the target for a long time.”
The three-year-old gelding was not rated as the favourite to succeed and entered the competition with a starting price of 5 to 1. Despite that, he triumphed by eight lengths, which was simply terrific.
