Montenegro beat Romania in preliminary round, Group B: Day four – European Water Polo Championships
Montenegrin squad beat Romania in their third Men’s water polo preliminary match of Group ‘B’ on fourth day of the ongoing 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Thursday, January 19 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Montenegrin team demonstrated their heart-felt efforts in the four-quarter game and snuggled victory by a margin of three goals. Romania failed to tackle gruelling efforts of Montenegrin squad and experienced their third defeat of the tournament with an 11-8 deficit in the 32-minute game.
Montenegro scored three goals in the initial four minutes on the first quarter. Their effort was followed by Romanian team, which fought back by notching up two goals but Montenegrin players accomplished two more goals in the last two minutes, making the score 5-2 after the first round.
Their eye-catching efforts continued in the second quarter, where Montenegrin athletes extended their lead to four goals by achieving three goals. In contrast, Romania was able to score just two goals and the score went up to 4-8 after the halftime.
The third quarter saw scintillating efforts of both teams, which tried to prove their mettle by scoring more goals but were able to obtain one goal each. After the third quarter, Montenegro successfully sustained its lead of four goals and the score remained 9-5.
The arena witnessed exhausting efforts of Romanian squad in the fourth quarter, where they scored more goals than Montenegrin team but it was inadequate to undo the damage. Romanian squad found the cage three times in final round whereas Montenegrin succeeded in achieving two goals only. Despite of their meagre performance in the last eight minutes, Montenegrin team claimed victory with a lead of three points.
Mladan Janovic of Montenegro marked three goals in the match to ensure his team’s victory and was announced as the player of the game. After winning the match, Montenegrin team has jumped to second place on the overall points table and are just three points behind Serbia, which ranks first.
In addition, Montenegro is now scheduled to compete with Spain in their fourth qualifying match on Saturday, January 21.
