Montenegro defeats Greece in the Men’s Quarterfinal: Day ten – European Water Polo Championships
Montenegrin squad served notice of their talent by defeating Greece in the Men’s Quarterfinal round for 1st-6th position on tenth day of the continued 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Wednesday, January
25 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Greek squad engaged Montenegrin team in a neck-to-neck battle throughout the four-quarter game, but Montenegro managed to succeed with a difference of two goals. Greece suffered loss in the quarterfinal round with an 11-9 defeat at the hands of Montenegrin
team.
These European Championships are very vital as they pave the way for the 2012 London Olympic Games. These also provide a great opportunity to world-class teams to participate against each other and overcome their weaknesses before the mega stage of sports.
The first quarter of the game was controlled by Greek players, who stunned the arena with their aggressive strategy and scored four goals. On the contrary, Montenegro marked just two goals in the first round and the round expired with a 2-4 effort from both
sides.
The situation reversed in the second quarter, where Montenegrin team elevated their efforts and ascended on the scorecard by notching up four goals. Their effort was followed by Greece team, which accomplished two goals, turning the score 6-6 after the halftime.
The same continued in the third quarter, where Montenegrin players went rampant and once again accomplished four goals. In contrast, Greece managed to improve their points by achieving two goals and the score remained 10-8 after the third quarter.
Subsequently, both squads elevated their efforts in the fourth quarter and the arena experienced one goal effort from both sides. Greek players struggled hard to level out the score and draw the match but their efforts were outsmarted by Montenegrin team,
which snuggled victory by a lead of two points.
Vladimir Gojkovic of Montenegro raked three goals for his team and played a strong role in his team’s victory.
In addition, Montenegro will now contest with Hungary in the semi-final round on Friday, January 27 while Greece will compete with Germany in the classification match for fifth position on Saturday, January 28.
