Montenegro upset Germany in preliminary round, Group B: Day one – European Water Polo Championships
Montenegro’s senior national team upset Germany in the qualifying round of Men’s water polo of Group B on foremost day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Monday, January 16 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Montenegrin squad went full rampant in the four quarter game and crushed their opponents by a margin of six goals in their first match of the tournament. German squad experienced their first loss at the European championships with a 13-7 defeat from
Montenegro.
Boris Zlokovic of Montenegro scored the debut goal for his team just after the initial two minutes of the game. His efforts were followed by his team-mate, Mladan Janovic, who scored two consecutive goals.
In the meantime, Marc Politze of Germany tried to minimum the loss and scored first goal for his team but his efforts were cut short by Montenegro’s Predrag Jokic, who scored fourth goal of the game and the round expired with a score of 4-1.
The second quarter saw dominating efforts of German players, who blocked almost all efforts of their challengers and scored two goals in the round while Montenegro managed to advance on the scorecard by just one fraction. The score went to 5-3 after the
halftime.
In third quarter, Montenegrin team elevated their efforts and accomplished three goals in the round while Germany remained consistent on its part and yet again scored two goals. The score went up to 8-5 after the third round.
Subsequently, the arena witnessed exhausting efforts of the Montenegrin team that notched up five goals in the fourth quarter, leaving no chance for Germany to fight back. The Germans managed to improve their points by two goals in the final round and lost
their first game of the championship.
Janovic played a vital part in the victory of his team by scoring five goals and was announced as the highest goal scorer of the game.
Montenegro is now scheduled to play against Croatia in its second match of the qualifying rounds while the crowd could not wait to see what comes up in the next game.
