Montenegro upset Serbia in preliminary round, Group B: Day eight – European Water Polo Championships
Montenegrin national team has upset Serbia in their fifth Men’s water polo qualifying match of Group ‘B’ on eighth day of the ongoing 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Monday, January 23 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband
Swim Stadium.
The Serbian squad tried hard to claim victory, but their efforts were overpowered by Montenegrin team that grabbed victory by a margin of four goals. Montenegrin squad enjoyed a commendable 11-7 win over Serbia in the four-quarter game.
The European Championships are of utmost value, as these will project the standings of all international teams at the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games. They also provide a chance to all players to improve their strategy before the mega event of sports.
The Serbian team demonstrated their noteworthy efforts in the first quarter by notching up two goals, but their struggle was surpassed by Montenegrin team that achieved three goals and the score went up to 3-2 after the first round.
The same continued in second quarter, where Montenegrin squad went on a rampage and blocked almost all goal attempts of their opposing team. Serbia stroke one goal while Montenegro managed to extend its lead by scoring three goals, making the score 6-3 after
the second round.
The third quarter saw relentless efforts of Serbian players, who managed to narrow down the lead to two goals only. Serbia scored four goals while Montenegro managed to sustain their position by accomplishing three goals. The score remained 9-7 after the
third quarter.
With everything dependent on the fourth quarter, the crowd expected a forceful combat from the Serbian team, but Montenegrin squad made no mistake and succeeded in clinching two goals. In contrast, Serbia failed to show any improvement on the points table
and lost the match with a deficit of four goals.
Aleksandar Ivovic and Mladan Janovic of Montenegro were declared highest goal scorers of the match as they chipped in three goals each and played a crucial role in their team’s victory. Furthermore, the Montenegrin team is now scheduled to compete with Greece
in the quarterfinal on Wednesday, January 25.
