Montepaschi Siena edge past GS Medical Park 67-63: Euroleague Basketball (Part 1)
Montepaschi Siena continued their good run in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague on Thursday night.
They already made it into the top 16 by winning their last outing against Union Olimpija, however by squeaking past GS Medical Park 67-63 just few hours ago, they have augmented their chances of finishing the first round as one
of the top three teams along with CSKA Moscow and FC Barcelona Regal.
Medical Park on the other hand, have dropped to 3-5, but they can still qualify for the second round if they beat Olimpija in the next game.
Although Park lost, but they put up a good fight and gave Siena a run for their money. Neither team, quite managed to dominate the proceedings and the pendulum kept on shifting throughout.
With two minutes remaining, Park were ahead by 58-57, however, the star of the night David Andersen, scored in quick succession and sealed the game for Siena.
David was superb and scored game high 18 points including 5 for 7 from the free throw line and also pulled down 8 rebounds. Igor Rakocevic supported David well and pounded 17.
Siena head coach, Simone Pianigiani was thrilled with the win because Siena came into this game with their three major players out because of the injury. He added
"Obviously tonight I’m very happy and proud of my players. We were without three players, three champions like Rimantas Kaukenas, Ksistof Lavrinovic and Bo McCalebb. I had to change completely everything inside my team in two
or three days. Also in my team, there were some players on the court tonight that were not in great shape. But we were in the Top 16 before this game. It’s important to show that we are still one of the strongest teams in Europe”
Jaka Lakovic paced Park with 15 points including 3 for 7 from the three-point range. Luksa Andric was also impressive and putting up an all round performance, he accumulated 14 points on 5 for 7 from the two point range and forced
7 rebounds as well. Jamon-Alfred Lucas also chipped in with his 10 for Medical Park.
