Montero-Pineda deal can prove to be costly for New York Yankees – MLB News
Jesus Montero displayed some high quality hitting and defensive skills last season after he was promoted to the Major Leagues. With a sensational .328 batting average and four home runs, he made a name for himself in his comeback season.
Despite delivering the goods for the Yankees, the catcher was traded to Seattle Mariners for the pitcher Michael Pineda. It seems as if Brian Cashman, Yankees’ general manager made this move as part of his rebuilding project. To powerful Yankees’ pitching line-up, Cashman traded several batters and catchers for pitchers just before the start of spring training session.
Pineda made the most of available opportunities last season as he posted a decent 9-10 win-loss record. In addition to his throwing abilities, the flame throwing starter is always looking to learn new tricks to improve his game play. He has already started to train with Yankees’ coaching staff and he will be looking forward to become an ace with the club. Undoubtedly, the starter will have an excellent opportunity to build an MVP career for himself this season.
However, many of the baseball writers and analysts believe that Montero-Pineda trade can prove to be very costly for the Yankees. It is not easy to find great hitters these days. Big League clubs spend millions of dollars every year to train their hitters and throwers. Montero had started to show glimpses of his talent last year. Trading him can prove to be very costly for the Yankees.
"It didn't surprise me," said team-mate Miguel Olivo, entering the final season of a two-year, $7 million contract. "You're competing every day in baseball. He's a good hitter and we need that. I hear he's going to be DH and catching and I'll be doing more of the catching, but I'm not looking at it that way. I'm just looking that he's coming to help the team."
"I'm happy that he's here and happy we're going to get more runs and help the team. I can't wait for the season to start,” he further added.
Cashman will have high expectations from Pineda to succeed in his rebuilding project. Montero, on the other hand, will be looking to continue his impressive form into the next season to earn cement a place in Marlins team.
