Monterosso: The unexpected champion of Dubai World Cup
On the afternoon of March 31, 2012 at Meydan (United Arab Emirates), none of the punters and the fans could imagine that an underdog would walk away with the glorious title of the Dubai World Cup, but a star of Godolphin shined resplendently to startle everyone----that
was no other than Monterosso who marvellously defeated a dozen of strong rivals to win the high-profile Group 1 race despite being a non-favourite runner.
Perhaps, it was one of the biggest upsets ever done in the history of Meydan stadium. The way the Mahmood Al Zarooni trained bay horse ran was amazing and the class he demonstrated was commendable. At the end of the race, the bookmakers were badly disappointed
and the spectators were astonished. It was quite an unbelievable and unexpected victory the legendary horse had bagged.
During March 2011, Monterosso achieved an epic conquest in the Dubai City Of Gold Sponsored By Emirates Airline (Group 2) (Turf) at the same track of Meydan. Right after one year, the maverick sprinter reaped a similar thing again.
The brilliant son of Dubawi out of Porto Roca possesses an outstanding and tremendous track record. Seven victories in 16-race career is really an awesome feat.
The Darley bred skilled horse started his professional career in November 2009. During January-April 2010, he marvellously won three races in a row. He moved on to bag a couple of consecutive triumphs during May-June of the same year.
Winning the Dubai World Cup was the peak point of the Monterosso’s career and a big breakthrough for him indeed, but the veteran runner could not be able to retain the form long and failed badly in the Coral –Eclipse (British Champions Series) (Group 1)
at Sandown on July 7.
But that was quite a misfortune that, hopefully, will not come again when he runs in the Juddmonte International Stakes (British Champions Series) (Group 1) on August 22, 2012. The 40-runner high-voltage event will be held at York.
The horse’s widespread fans are eagerly waiting for the next month to watch their beloved runner fighting for success. Let us see how Monterosso manages to live up to all the expectations.
