Montgomery ward oil furnace

i have an old montgomery ward oil furnace that i am trying to clean. the unit works great-no problems. i removed and cleaned the flue pipe which was half full of soot, scale, and rust.then i started cleaning the furnace. between where the flue pipe exits and the big round metal drum(heat exchanger or fire box?)there is about a 2 inch space that is full of scale and debris. icleaned as much as i could, but there is still more that is really hard to reach.i found traces of insulation and stopped. what i would like to know is; is this area supposed to have insulation? how critical is it that i remove all of the scale? and can i pull the front panel off that is above the burner to gain access for cleaning? the model # is 15AN-6124A if that helps you any. i appreciate any help you could give
