Olivier Giroud was once again the decisive factor for Montpellier Herault as La Paillade managed to beat Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 in Week 20 of the 2011/2012 Ligue 1 campaign.
The France international is currently in the best for of his life and has already scored 14 goals which makes him the top scorer in Ligue 1.
However, the striker’s performances have led the speculation linking him with a move away from the club. Though Montpellier owner, Loulou Nicolas is adamant that he will let go of his star player after seeing him become a lethal striker for only one season,
it seems that the Ligue 1 side could be hard-pressed to hold on to Giroud.
While talking to Le Paris, Giroud spoke about his ambitions for this season.
“It should become an objective since I have taken a small step. We must be ambitious in life. I will surpass twenty goals for the season and would be satisfied,” confessed the striker who knows that staying in form is an absolute key for him if he wants
to represent France in the European Championships this summer.
France manager, Laurent Blanc has already said that he is yet to decide on the squad and indicated that there are slots still available which means that Giroud might get the nod if he manages to score above 20 goals this campaign which would in itself, be
a great achievement for a striker who was playing in the lower echelons of football a few years back.
However, his form will give Montpellier a few headaches as the player’s performances have not gone unnoticed.
“If I want to go to the Euro, it is important to finish in the front (to be the top scorer). I say that we want to play in Europe,” said Giroud which clearly means that his chances of staying at Montpellier depend totally on his club’s ability to qualify
for Europe.
Currently, La Paillade are in second place in the league which means that the club could be playing in Europe which might extend Giroud’s stay for at least one more season.
