Two goals from striker John Utaka on both sides of the two halves made sure that Montpellier Herault won their first-ever domestic Championelle after a 2-1 win over http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/AJ-Auxerre-c38247
Rene Girard’s men travelled to the troubled area of Burgundy to face already-relegated AJ Auxerre in their final game of the 2011/2012 Championelle knowing that only a draw would be enough for them to be crowned the new champions of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899.
On the other side, Paris Saint-Germain played Lorient. Though Carlo Ancelotti’s men were able to get the right result at home, it wasn’t enough as two goals from striker John Utaka in each half made sure that Montpellier were crowned the sixth different
Ligue 1 winner of this millennium.
Auxerre were already condemned to Ligue 2 football way before the game started. However, the Burgundy club was naturally going to try and finish the season on a strong note by pooping Montpellier’s party.
And, it seemed that Auxerre were going to make a fight of it when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olivier-Kapo-c28507, who had been relatively mute throughout the game, gave the hosts a lead in the 20th minute. However, that was not enough for the ‘Auxerrois’ fans as they started throwing
tennis balls on the pitch.
12 minutes later, John Utaka came up with the goods to level scoring. 15 minutes before time, the Nigerian international once again found the net to cap off another great performance from Rene Girard’s men.
La Paillade ended the season with a three-point lead over Paris Saint-Germain.
The game started at great pace as Auxerre looked to recover some lost pride. First http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roy-Contout-c31813 shot that somehow managed to find its way past him.
Though they conceded a soft goal, Montpellier had good chances. First Olivier Giroud failed to score his 22nd league goal and then it was http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olivier-Sorin-c28516.
Soon after, Sorin was beaten when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Camara-c8277 teed up a brilliant ball towards Utaka who need no second invitation to put the ball inside the net.
As the players came out of the tunnel after the break, they were forced to return to their dressing rooms once again as Auxerre fans started violently protesting at their club’s odd and cruel predicament. The fans’ actions left Montpellier custodian, Geoffrey
Jourdren’s goal thoroughly inundated with green tennis balls.
The game started after a 10-minute delay and it was Montpellier’s turn to lay siege on the home side’s defence.
In the end, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/John-Utaka-c18898 scored his second goal of the night as Montpellier’s name was propelled in French football history.
