Montpellier or Toulouse?

I will be traveling around europe this summer and I especially am looking forward to visiting france.. only we only have less than a week to stay in each country (about 1 month long trip)

We will be in paris and would eventually like to visit barcelona, so we'd also like to visit a city in southern france.

Because we have so little time, which city would you recommend that will also be convenient to move onto barcelona from? Our ages are 18, 18, and 21.

I know we will be guaranteed a beautiful city anywhere in france, only which will be better for this trip? thanks in advance!

  1. Montpellier is right next to the sea, it's a cool place.

Toulouse a big city but it's in the middle of the country side, there is nothing much interesting to see there.

  2. i agree that the south of france is beautiful, i like it better than paris. u should visit the place with a very old bridge. um its called something like 'le (french word for bridge) du gard' its beautiful and from jesus' time or something.

  3. I've been to Montpellier. Beautiful city, and certainly worth a visit. I've never been to Toulouse, though I have a sneaking suspicion that it has far more to offer than Nuxly Stardust would have us believe. Have you visited the tourism websites for those two cities?

    http://www.ot-montpellier.fr/

    http://www.uk.toulouse-tourisme.com

NOTE: The city of Toulouse evidently doesn't take its tourism websites very seriously, seeing as all of my research on Google and Wikipedia has only turned up a series of non-functioning links that all seem to be useless. Still, I'm sure it's a great city...

EDIT: Meli- You're referring to the Pont du Gard, which is farther east, not too far from Nîmes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pont_du_Gar...

  4. prefer toulouse, the city is much beautifull than montpellier !

    and bigger...

  5. I vote for Montpellier, merely for practical reasons. Not that it's more beautiful than Toulouse because it isn't, but it's got a more open feel to it, being close to the sea. It's a student city so it's vibrant (even if most of them will have deserted the city in the summer) and there are direct trains to Barcelona (Toulouse doesn't).
