  1. Montreal is a very english speaking city.

It's only when you get out into the surrounding smaller towns where people may not speak english.

  2. Where did you learn your French girl???

    How downright atrocious!

    Parlez-vous français? Parlez-vous anglais?

Yes of course people speak French in Montreal - more so than English actually.

    What were you thinking?

Although a substantial amount of the population is bilingual - especially on the west side of town so try and stick to it if you don't want to end up feeling completely lost!

    See for yourself!

The official language of Montreal is French as defined by the city's charter. It is among the five largest French-speaking cities in the world. As of the 2006 Canadian Census, 1,620,693 people resided in the city of Montreal proper. The population of the Montreal Census Metropolitan Area (also known as Greater Montreal Area) was 3,635,571 at the same 2006 census. In the census metropolitan area, French is the language most spoken at home by 70.5% of the population (as of 2006 census). In 2007, Montreal was ranked as the 10th cleanest city in the world

Good luck to you & enjoy your trip to Montreal!

  3. In Montreal, they speak French and English.

You'll have no trouble if you only speak English.

As for French, I'm sure you'll pick it.

    and it's "Parlez-vous anglais?"

  4. Montreal is a cosmopolitan city and the two official languages here are french and english, like everywhere else in Canada. Most of people speak both languages and if you, as a tourist, speak only one of them you'll be just fine. Come and visit us, it's a magnificent city!

And by the way, it's "parlez-vous français (ou anglais)"...

  5. Ah, brings back memories.   I think you will enjoy Montreal.   Yes, learn a few key phrases like 'excuse me', can you help me, can you translate, etc.     While it was many years ago, I found nearly everyone I dealt with VERY polite and helpful.  I found that if you made an effort in French (mine is limited, at best) with a non-English speaking citizen, they would respect that and go out of their way to try to help you, or find someone who could.  Quebec is the major area where French is spoken (there it is the primary language).  20 yrs ago I was very impressed with the city and surrounding area.  Nice and clean.     It  IS a city, though, so you need to be careful/aware.   Not everyone has your best interests at heart!        Hope you enjoy it as well .

Oh, and some Canadians will beg to differ that it is like America.  They are rightfully proud of their country, and may not like the comparison.
