Montreal Canadiens, Josh Gorges agree on six-year contract extension -NHL Update
Montreal Canadiens defenseman, Josh Gorges, came to mutual terms with his team for the past six seasons on agreeing to six-year contract extension, announced through a press release on Sunday night, January 1, 2012, of which the financial terms and conditions were not released as per club policy on the issue.
Although the financial part of the six-year contract extension was not revealed by the National Hockey League (NHL) club, the deal is reported to be worth $3.9 million per season, which is quite a great deal for a player who had never been formally drafted into the major league.
Gorges’ one-year contract that he signed last year on July 22 was coming to an end this year, which signalled the club to begin negotiations on a new deal. His current one-year deal is worth $2.5 million, meaning that he will get nearly $1.4 million extra every year according to the new contract.
Staying in Montreal was something that Gorges was hoping for before officially signing any deal, that too for as long as possible.
"I wanted a multi-year deal", Gorges said shortly after signing that contract. "I've said it right from the start, I'll say it today and I'll say it to anyone who asks that I want to stay in Montreal as long as I can. It feels like home to me, I've been there long enough that I really enjoy my time there. I enjoy the team, I enjoy the organization and I enjoy the fans. That's where I want to be, that's where I want to win a Stanley Cup. So I wanted to get as many years as I could".
Josh Gorges, a 27-year-old defenseman from Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, was picked up by San Jose Sharks after a season with their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, Cleveland Barons.
He played two straight seasons with San Jose before coming onto the Montreal club. The 2008-2009 regular season was a breakthrough for the player as he picked up career high 23 points (4 goals, 19 assists) in 81 games played.
At the moment, Gorges has appeared in 403 major league matchups and has a total of 69 points (10 goals 59 assists).
