Montreal Canadiens' Carey Price blocks 23 to shutout Winnipeg Jets 3-0 -NHL Update
Carey Price showed some excellent form on Sunday night, February 5, 2012, as he blocked all 23 attempts made by Winnipeg as Montreal Canadiens shutout the Jets, 3-0, at the sold-out Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Montreal finally managed to snap their three-game losing streak which came as a result of a number of players feeling the heat with the team’s management wanting to see results.
Winnipeg on the other hand is sitting at the number 10 spot in the Eastern Conference and the Jets are hoping to move up into the playoff spots but being six points below the eighth place Toronto Maple Leafs, working towards that goal in their upcoming games
should be their top priority at the moment.
Max Pacioretty grabbed the first goal of the night as he tipped in a shot by Yannick Weber by hacking at the puck in the Winnipeg goalie’s crease, finally putting it in for his 19th goal of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season.
Winnipeg had a number of power play advantages throughout the 60-minute contest but the Jets coach was certainly flustered with confusion as his team failed to take advantage at any moment along with letting Montreal score a shorthanded goal.
"I thought we started the game well," Jets’ coach, Claude Noel, said. "I thought our power play the first period at the 10-minute mark of the first period certainly didn't help us any and they took their game up and our game went down, and we didn't do a
lot of things well through the two periods at all.”
Alexei Emelin added the shorthanded goal at the 7:20 mark of the second while Tomas Plekanec was awarded the confusion shot on the power play as many thought that Montreal’s Scott Gomez might have finally finished off his yearlong scoring drought.
"To me at first, I thought Gomer scored right away," Plekanec said. "He told me it wasn't his goal, but I was hoping it was so we can stop talking about it."
The Jets will have another chance to get a victory when they host Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday while Montreal Canadiens stay at home to play against Pittsburgh Penguins the same day.
