Montreal Canadiens' General Manager Marc Bergevin confident after first NHL Draft -offseason Update
Marc Bergevin, the newly appointed Montreal Canadiens’ general manager, was all smiles after his first National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft in the position over the weekend and expressed his confidence coming out of it after having made some significant
decisions.
One of those decisions was picking centre player, Alex Galchenyuk, who had been on the Montreal Canadiens radar from the start along with being predicted as being selected as the No. 3rd overall.
"I'm very excited," Bergevin said about Montreals first round and two second round picks for the first time since 2008. "For my first draft, time will tell, but I feel really proud of the guys that we picked today."
Montreal also picked up one of the top ranked European players, Sebastian Collberg, a left winger who was rated as the third foreign player by the NHL’s Central Scouting. They also picked up Dalton Thrower with their No. 51.
"We added a lot of talent, a lot of scoring upside and we added some toughness, some grit and some physicality as well," said Montreal’s amateur scouting director, Trevor Timmins. "Only time will tell, but right now we're very happy. It's like Christmas
Day -- Santa Claus arrived and now we've opened our gifts. Now it's time to get to work to try and help these players develop further to reach their full potential. That's our job now."
According to the Montreal Canadiens scouting team, they were surprised that a number of the players they picked, especially the ones in the second round, were still up for grabs. They termed it to be the lacking of scouting teams for other clubs since those
players were immensely talented and should have gone first.
Montreal Canadiens have had a pretty rough ride these past few seasons and with Marc Bergevin making changes left and right, fans believe that in due time, the Canadian club will be back and being worthy of competing in the playoffs like a Stanley Cup winning
team that it is.
The next step for Bergevin is the free agency, which will definitely be exciting to see which moves they make for the upcoming season.
