Montreal Canadiens defeat the Atlanta Thrashers 3-1 – NHL Recap
The Montreal Canadiens beat the Atlanta Thrashers 3-1 at the Centre Bell on Wednesday. The Canadiens are in the National Hockey League play-off cut, as the Thrashers were in a ‘do or die’ situation to win if they wanted to keep their hopes of reaching the
play-offs.
The game started with the Thrashers stronger on the attacks, but the Canadiens got better and better and finally scored twice in the beginning to get into the lead. They scored once again to double their advantage and send the home crowd wild. The second
period saw both teams coming up with quite a few shots on goal, but they were not able to find the back of the net. The final 20 minutes of play saw both teams scoring a goal apiece, but it was the Canadiens who emerged as 3-1 winners of the game. Carey Price,
goal-keeper of the Canadiens was named the Star of the Game, as he made 27 saves during the match.
The Thrashers made a strong start of the game, but the Canadiens started to get better with the passage of time and scored in the 13th minute to get into the lead. The goal was scored by Roman Hamrlik from a well placed flick-shot.
The Canadiens kept on piling the pressure and scored in the next minute to double the lead. The goal was scored by Mathieu Darche from an amazing flick-shot. The shots kept on coming, but the period ended with the Canadiens leading 2-0. The period saw the
Canadiens making 14 shots on goal while the Thrashers made 7 attempts.
The second period saw both teams starting off on the slower side, but they managed to fire shots on goal from all over the ice. There were a couple of good scoring chances for both teams, but they were unable to manage a goal, as the period ended with the
Canadiens still leading 2-0.
During the course of the period, the Canadiens made 10 shots on goal while the Thrashers made 11.
The final period kicked off with both teams making a couple of shots on goal right from the start. The Thrashers managed to bag their first goal in the 9th minute with Nik Antropov scoring from a well placed flick-shot.
Both teams continued to fire shots on goal, but the Canadiens scored the final goal in the 19th minute through Andrei Kostitsyn to win the game 3-1. The final period saw the Canadiens making 7 shots on goal while the Thrashers made 10.
