Montreal Canadiens’ defenseman Andrei Markov talks about his future in an interview in Russia
Andrei Markov, a professional ice hockey player and a Russian international caused a lot of controversy when he gave an interview to someone in Russia, in which he gave comments about National Hockey League (NHL) and Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
The interview was taken by two Sovietsky Sports Reporters on Thursday, in which they asked him about his future in the hockey and made him talk about both the leagues. The Russian defenseman, who plays for Montreal Canadiens in the NHL, answered the questions.
The interview was broadcasted by the Russia TV channel RDS’s Hockey 360, in which Genadi Boguslavsky, who is a hockey writer, based in Montreal, Canada and the other person, Pavel Lysenkov, Moscow based NHL writer took the interview. Also with Markov in
the interview was another KHL player Vityaz Chekhov.
When he was asked about the comments of some Russian league players that they thinks NHL players will stay in KHL even after the lockout ends, the 33-year-old thought it was a difficult question to answer because all the players want fair and square contracts
in NHL and he has not made his mind yet about what he would be going to do about it. He would wait for the right time, as he said,
“That’s a difficult question. I think every player in the NHL just wants a fair agreement. I can’t say right now if I’m staying or going back in the NHL, but I’ll see when the time comes and then I’m going to make a decision.”
Markov also clarified that his first priority is to stay in NHL and get back there as soon as the lockout ends but he also has in his mind that all the players are with him in the NHLPA and they all have to look for the right agreement together. As soon
as that happens, he would be back in Montreal, as he added,
“My priority is to play in the NHL, to come back to Montreal. This isn’t just about me. All players want a fair (CBA) agreement, right? If that happens, I’ll be in Montreal”.
