Montreal Canadiens down Buffalo Sabres 4-3 in shootout -NHL Update
Montreal is frustrated as they still sit out of the playoff race but were given a boost in motivation to continue fighting as the Canadiens downed Buffalo Sabres, 4-3, in a shootout on Friday night, February 17, 2012, at the sold-out First Niagara Center
in Buffalo, New York.
Unfortunately for Buffalo, they currently sit at number 15 in the Eastern Conference with 55 points and making things even worse, they have lost their last four matchups consecutively, which certainly does not show any signs of getting better.
Montreal on the other hand is at number 11 with 58 points and need to continue winning if they want to see the postseason this time around.
"We've got to continue to go here. We don't have time to look at it and reflect," Montreal Canadiens’ defenseman, P.K. Subban, said. "We've got a long way to go."
Canadiens and Sabres were head-to-head in the opening period as veteran defenseman, Robyn Regehr, finally got his first goal of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season and with Buffalo after being traded by Calgary Flames.
Former Boston Bruins’ player, Tomas Kaberle, added with Montreal’s first while Tyler Myers broke the tie at 15:43 but Scott Gomez picked up his second of the year on their second power play opportunity with less than 15 seconds remaining.
Chris Campoli took the lead for Montreal and gave them something to work on heading into the third period but as they failed to add anymore in the third, Tyler Ennis levelled the match to force an uncertain overtime, eventually heading into a shootout decider.
Montreal’s superstar goalie, Carey Price, gave the team what they needed as Max Pacioretty and David Desharnais scored on both Canadiens first two attempts while Buffalo failed on their two, giving the visitors the victory.
"Any way you win it, obviously, those are extra points that we desperately want and need," interim Montreal coach, Randy Cunneyworth, said. "I think we deserved it tonight. I'm happy for the boys. It's good to get the reward."
Montreal is hoping to continue with this momentum as they host New Jersey Devils on Sunday while Buffalo is set to take on Pittsburgh Penguins on the same day.
