Montreal Canadiens edge past the Florida Panthers 3-2 in overtime
Montreal Canadiens defenceman James Wisniewski scored twice – including one in overtime – to help his side edge past the Florida Panthers 3-2 on Friday night.
Both teams had a slow start to the game with neither side committing too many men in attack. The game was more like a see-saw affair with the momentum shifting every now and then. The teams tried hard to break down each others defence, but chances were few
and far between. Every time it looked like someone was about to score, someone in the defence came up with a big effort. There were no goals in the opening period and the score was deadlocked at nil-nil. The Montreal Canadiens made nine goal attempts, while
the Florida Panthers had six goal attempts in the opening period.
The Florida Panthers changed their strategy after the break, and attacked right from the word go in the second period. This immediately paid off as they scored in the very first minute through Stephen Weiss to take the lead. Soon after, the home team successfully
doubled their advantage with a goal in the third minute. The goal was scored by Dmitry Kulikov from a brilliant flick shot.
After doubling their lead, the home team took the foot off the gas but that went against them. Montreal started to find space and came up with some strong pieces of play. This led to them scoring in the 11th minute through James Wisniewski. A
few minutes later, Brian Gionta scored for Montreal once again to level the scores. The period ended with the Canadiens finishing on a high, even though the scores were level at 2-2. During the period, Montreal made 21 goal attempts compared to the Panthers
10 goal attempts.
The final period saw Montreal continuing to dominate the proceedings at the start. However, as the period progressed the Panthers also showed some resistance, but no more goals were scored and the match went into overtime. During overtime, James Wisniewski
scored in the 4th minute, which won Montreal Canadiens the match 3-2.
