Montreal Canadiens gearing up for the dominating Detroit Red Wings – NHL News Update
It looks as if nothing is going to stop the Detroit Red Wings from continuing their invincible run. Not even the Montreal Canadiens, who are going to host them in a National Hockey League (NHL) game on Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at the Bell Centre, Montreal,
Quebec, Canada.
The Red Wings are on a seven-game winning streak and have only lost two of their last 12 games. Moreover, they have won 17 straight games on home-ice and are three victories short of levelling the overall NHL record of the longest home-ice winning streak.
Their recent victory was against St. Louis Blues (3-1). After falling one goal behind at the end of the first period, the Red Wings came back strong and scored two goals in the second and one in the final to seal the victory.
The game witnessed aggressive game-play from both the teams, which gave away a number of penalties. However, the Red Wings were more disciplined and eventually the winners.
“Their emotions got a little too high and ours weren’t high enough to begin with, but we keep them in check and took advantage of some undisciplined play from them and I think that was the difference,” Detroit’s defenseman, Brad Stuart, said.
After playing 49 games in the season, the Red Wings have 67 points and are leading the NHL Western Conference.
On the other hand, the Canadiens are not having as ideal run as the Red Wings. They have played 48 games and are ranked at 12th spot in the NHL Eastern Conference with 45 points.
Out of last their 17 games, the Canadiens have lost 12 games and in no way giving an impression of a solid team.
However, they defeated Toronto Maple Leafs (3-1) on Saturday to snap their two-game losing streak.
After scoring and allowing a goal in the first period, and spending the next one goalless, the Canadiens scored two in the final to take the game away from the opponents.
The Canadiens are well-aware of their slump, but think that they could still turn the things round for themselves.
"There's still a light at the end there," Canadiens’ forward Lars Eller said. "There are more than 30 games to go and we still have a lot of faith in this locker-room. We'll play one game at a time and see what happens."
The Canadiens last failed to reach the playoffs in 2007. In order not to repeat the failure again, they have to get back to the winning ways, but the Red Wings are not going to be easily outclassed.
