Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price suffers mild concussion, to miss remaining season -NHL Update
Montreal might finally have found a reason to be thankful of not making the playoffs this time around as the Canadiens lost their top goalie, Carey Price, due to a mild concussion which will have him missing the remaining portion of the 2011-2012 National
Hockey League (NHL) regular season.
It was during a practice earlier last week during the team’s practice session as a fellow teammate, David Desharnais, collided with the young goalie, giving him reoccurring headaches ever since.
“Carey usually doesn’t stay down very often,” Desharnais said this week. “He was a bit shaken up. I fell right on his head.”
He was re-examined in the following days and it was made official on Wednesday by the club’s medical staff that the 24-year-old goalie is suffering from a concussion.
Price was not feeling any concussion symptoms coming out of the collision with Desharnais, but that is how concussions work according to the medical staff. Sometimes, the after effects are sudden and visible while others come out slowly.
"There's contact like that every day," interim Montreal head coach, Randy Cunneyworth, said, "not to mention pucks hitting the mask. ... Goalies shake that off and keep going."Trying to pinpoint one incident, for me, is a moot point because it happens almost
every day. Part of our drills are designed to drive the net and drive the goalies."
At the moment, Montreal stands at the lowest spot in the Eastern Conference with 75 points and had been eliminated from the playoffs a long time back.
Carey Price has been a lifeline player for Montreal having played 65 games this season alone and achieving 26 wins and 28 losses with 11 matches that headed into overtime and four into shootouts.
He also boasts a .916 save percentage and 2.43 goals against average.
Price played in their next matchup against Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday, but it seems as if it just aggravated the condition ever further. He will not be playing with Montreal Canadiens as they face Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday and return home to
host Toronto Maple Leafs in their season finale.
There is no set date for a full recovery at the moment but it is most likely that the concussion will not last long.
