Montreal Canadiens hire Scott Mellanby as new Director of Player Personnel -NHL Update
Montreal Canadiens continued to work on their front office as the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise announced the hiring of former St. Louis Blues assistant coach, Scott Mellanby, as the team’s new director of player personnel on Monday, May 28, 2012.
Having left the St. Louis Blues assistant coaching position a week earlier and being hired by Montreal in such a short period of time, rumours have arisen that newly appointed Montreal Canadiens general manager, Marc Bergevin, has been dealing with officials
of other teams off the record.
When Mellanby retired from his potion with the Blues, the 45-year-old announced his decision to be related to the fact that he wanted to work in the front office of a team and not in the coaching staff.
"We are extremely happy to have Scott Mellanby joining the Canadiens organization," Montreal GM Bergevin said. "Scott has an impressive background and a commanding knowledge of the league, having played for 21 seasons in the NHL before holding various management
positions over the last four years.”
"Scott is known for his character and his leadership, which made him a great team captain during six seasons with the Florida Panthers and the Atlanta Thrashers. He has extensive knowledge of the game, is well respected in the hockey circles and will become
an important asset for our organization," he added.
One thing that Mellanby and Bergevin have in common is that they both played on the St. Louis Blues team during the 2001-2002 regular season and have remained friends ever since. The Montreal GM also called up Mellanby during his tenure as the assistant
Chicago Blackhawks GM when he needed a scout for the franchise.
Bergevin also knows that Mellanby has always been a fan of the Montreal Canadiens, which was another factor in the hiring.
Mellanby is known for his strategic planning and the ability to get the work done. Setting goals is something that Mellanby can do and achieving them is what he does even better. Montreal Canadiens are in need of such a man to help them become a better team
and eventually get back into the NHL elite ranking.
