Montreal Canadiens relieve Randy Cunneyworth, Randy Ladouceur of assistant coaching duties -NHL Update
Newly appointed Montreal Canadiens head coach, Michel Therrien, did not waste any time in rebuilding the coaching staff as he relieved Randy Cunneyworth and Randy Ladouceur of their assistant coach portfolios on Wednesday, June 6, 2012.
It can also be seen that recently appointed general manager, Marc Bergevin, had a hand in the firing as well since Montreal Canadiens are desperate at the moment to get back to their winning ways and reorganising the staff has been one of his main issues
since overtaking the position.
Letting go of the assistant coaching staff was one thing but doing it before the season started was another aspect since it would obviously take time for Cunneyworth and Ladouceur to find other opportunities in the National Hockey League (NHL).
"Following my appointment as head coach of the Montreal Canadiens, I made the decision of bringing together a new coaching staff," Therrien said. "Out of respect for Randy Cunneyworth and Randy Ladouceur, I felt it was important that I notify them immediately
in order for them to start looking for other opportunities without further delay. On behalf of the organization, I would like to thank both of them for their valuable contribution to the team and wish them the very best for the future."
Cunneyworth has some head coaching experience as well since he was made the interim coach for Montreal Canadiens after they relieved Jacques Martin earlier last regular season following a disappointing season.
The interim coach failed to make any significant impact after taking over as Montreal failed to make the playoffs and ended as the 15th number team in the Eastern Conference, only a year after they played against Boston Bruins in the postseason.
Both Cunneyworth and Ladouceur had been promoted to the assistant coaching staff by ex-coach Martin last season but their presence was just not making any favourable impact for the Canadiens.
Neither GM Bergevin nor coach Therrien have made any announcements about any replacements to the two now vacant positions, but it is expected that not much time will be spent in filling the gaps.
It will definitely be interesting to see who comes in to take over the positions and where the two fired assistants will be working next.
