Montreal Canadiens sign two new assistant coaches Randy Cunneyworth, Randy Ladouceur –NHL Update
Montreal Canadiens added depth to their coaching staff on Friday, July 22, as they signed on two new assistant coaches, Randy Cunneyworth and Randy Ladouceur, who were both former players in the National Hockey League (NHL) and have spent time in previous
coaching positions.
Canadiens' general manager, Pierre Gauthier, announced the move on Friday during a press conference in the teams’ hometown.
Both Randy’s are former professional hockey players and have nearly 30 years of playing experience combined.
Cunneyworth has the most with 15 seasons under his belt. The now 50-year-old begun his career in the NHL after being drafted as the 167th overall pick in round-eight of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft by Buffalo Sabres.
The former left winger played with Buffalo Sabres for two consecutive seasons and moved on to teams like Pittsburgh Penguins, Winnipeg Jets, Hartford Whalers, Ottawa Senators, Chicago Blackhawks and finally ended his career during the 1998-1999 seasons by
appearing in 14 final games with Buffalo.
Cunneyworth continued to play in the American Hockey League (AHL) with Rochester Americans, but finished up in 2000.
He boasts an 866 game playing record in the NHL, in which he scored 414 points (189 goals, 225 assists).
Randy Ladouceur played as a defenseman from 1982-1996 after being picked up by Detroit Red Wings and also continued to play with Adirondack Red Wings in the AHL.
His career continued with Red Wings up until 1986 when he was traded to Hartford Whalers and participated in his last three major league seasons with Anaheim Ducks.
The 51-year-old holds a record of playing 930 games in which he potted 156 points (30 goals, 126 assists).
One problem Cunneyworth and Ladouceur will certainly not have to go through is the adjustment phase with each other since the latter was assistant to the former who was head coach of Montreal’s affiliate club in the AHL, Hamilton Bulldogs in Ontario last
season.
Prior to that, Cunneyworth was assistant coach for Atlanta Thrashers for two seasons and Ladouceur was also an assistant coach with Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple leafs.
Seeing their experience and familiarity with the game, both Randy’s will provide Montreal with exceptional insight.
