Montreal Canadiens win 3-1 against the Atlanta Thrashers despite away disadvantage
The Atlanta Thrashers hosted the Montreal Canadiens in another one of Tuesday’s game at the Philips Arena.
The game was very important for both the teams with the Thrashers looking to make it into the play-off cut while the Canadiens wanted to win to maintain their position in the top half of the table.
Though the game got off to a slow start but the Canadiens started to come up with some brilliant plays that saw them leading by a goal at the end of the first period.
In fact, they scored in each of the three periods with the Thrashers scoring once to win the game 3-1 in the end.
Carey Price of Canadiens was named the star of the game as he made 40 saves during the course of the game.
Thrashers was the stronger of the two teams at the start of the game as the came up with some brilliant plays and shots on goal.
There were some excellent defending and attacking observed during the course of the period but no goals were scored early in the period.
The Canadiens came up with some decent plays as well which saw them attacking and finally scoring in the 14th minute to get into the lead. The goal was scored by Max Pacioretty from a powerfully struck shot.
Both teams continued to attack which saw them coming across scoring chances regularly. However, there were no further goals scored during the remaining period.
The Canadiens led 1-0 as the teams went into the break. During the period, the Canadiens made five goal attempts while the Thrashers made nine goal attempts.
The second period started off with the Canadiens coming up with a brilliant play in the very first minute which resulted in them scoring through James Wisniewski from a decent strike during the power play.
This doubled the lead for the Canadiens as the home fans went silent.
The Thrashers got stronger with the passage of time and fired shot on goal every now and then.
However, like the previous period they were not able to near the goal as much as they would have liked. Resultantly, they couldn’t score any goals as the period ended.
The Canadiens were in a comfortable 2-0 lead at the end of the period with the Thrashers making 16 goal attempts during the period while the Canadiens made 8 goal attempts.
The final period was reflection of the second period. However, it took some time for the first goal to be scored in the period.
The goal was scored by Nik Antropov from a brilliant tip in shot in the 15th minute. The Thrashers knew that this was no more than consolation.
The Canadiens kept playing some decent ice hockey till the end of the game where they scored once more in the final minute through Brian Gionta from a backhand shot to win the game 3-1 in the end.
During the final period, the Thrashers made 16 goal attempts while the Canadiens made 10 goal attempts.
