Montreal Canadiens win second of season over Philadelphia Flyers 5-1 -NHL Match Update
Montreal got a much needed win on Wednesday night, October 26, 2011, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, as the Canadiens beat the Philadelphia Flyers, 5-1, after losing six straight to various teams and ended their three-game road trip with
a 1-1-1 record.
The Canadeins had more shots on the net but Carey Price remained concrete in the net for his team by blocking 21 of 22 attempts made by Philadelphia, while the Flyers veteran goalie fell short on five and blocked only 23 of 28.
"We needed to get that one", Price said. "It was a tough stretch there, honestly. It was pretty tough mentally on everybody so we're just glad to have that over with and at least we have a chance to get right back into it (Thursday) night (in Boston). Hopefully
we can continue what we did tonight".
Max Pacioretty, who was not scheduled to play prior to the match due to an upper-body injury, made his debut and regarded the victory as a changeup of strategies to try something new which fortunately worked.
"When things are not going your way you've got to mix things up and it kind of sent a message to the players that they're willing to do what it takes to win hockey games”, said Montreal forward, Max Pacioretty.
Jaromir Jagr potted his third goal in two matchups midway through the opening period, followed by Montreal’s, Yannick Weber, to level the contest with three seconds remaining during their second power play opportunity as Philadelphia’s Andreas Lilja was
booked for interference with a minor penalty.
Andrei Kostitsyn and Max Pacioretty scored two goals back-to-back to take the lead and extend it, giving the sold-out crowd a ray of hope that their team finally might be on track to winning.
Pacioretty added his second of the match and forth of the season 3:16 into the third while Mike Cammalleri made the insuring goal with less than five minutes to play to take the game.
Montreal currently sits at the number 14 spot in the Eastern Conference and hopes to continue their winning in order to move up in the ranks. The Canadiens will face-off against the Boston Bruins in back-to-back matchups on Thursday and Saturday to end the
month.
Philadelphia has its next two games at home against the Winnipeg Jets and Carolina Hurricanes on the same days.
