Montreux Volley Masters Tournament not to be held in 2012 – Volleyball news
The Montreux Volley Master, which is the annual international women’s volleyball tournament played in Montreux, Switzerland, will skip the 2012 edition on account of busy schedule of teams.
The tournament usually takes place on the shores of famous Lac Leman, one of the largest lakes in Western Europe. The Montreux Volley Master was incepted in 1984 and it has not skipped a year since last 10 years. However, there will be no Montreux Volley
Masters in 2012.
The 2012 London Olympics is the biggest reason for the delay of Swiss tournament. The qualification phase of the Olympic Games is underway. Some of the top teams in the world have earned the Olympic tickets, while many are still perusing their Olympic dreams
and the process will be continued until June.
In the first place, the Olympic qualifying tournaments will keep the teams busy and then Summer Olympics will undergo from July to August. Furthermore, there will be events such as FIVB World Grand Prix, the FIVB World Cup and various other intercontinental
events as well.
Overall, the 2012 volleyball calendar is totally packed up. That is why most of the teams could not commit to play at the 2012 Montreux Volley Masters. In such situation, there was no other option available than to defer the Swiss tournament until next year.
The previous edition of the Montreux Volley Masters was a great success though. Teams from China, Japan, United States, Germany, Peru, Cuba, the Netherlands, and Italy fought for supremacy on the centre court and staged enthralling action of volleyball.
Japanese ladies stood apart from others with a distinction as they climbed up the top slot. They push everyone aside and got their hands on the gold medal at 2011 Montreux Volley Masters.
It was the first time in the history of Montreux Volley Masters that Japan secured the gold medal. However, Japan had secured bronze medals in 1989 and 2001. Caribbean team from Cuba and China finished in second and third positions, respectively.
Overall, Cuba is the top team of the Montreux Volley Masters as the Caribbean side has claimed nine gold medal, four silver, and three bronze medals in the previous years. Likewise, China is number 2 with five gold medals, 9 silver, and four bronze medals.
According to the new plan, the postponed Montreux Volley Masters will now take place from June 4 to 9 in 2013.
