Montserrat Gonzalez downs Petra Rohanova in Girls’ Singles 3rd round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Top seeds’ rule continue at the Girls’ Singles at the Wimbledon Championships, as the sixth seed Montserrat Gonzalez of Paraguay eased her way through the third round of the tournament by taking down Petra Rohanova of Czech Republic on Thursday.
In the contest being played on the Court 16 of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, the Paraguayan registered a straight sets victory at 6-3, 6-3, to oust Rohanova in the third round of the Grand Slam tournament.
It took merely 67 minutes for Gonzalez to conclude victory over the bleak Czech opponent in the most convincing manner. She faced limited challenges from Rohanova, who was led down by her error-ridden game in the contest. The contest was packed with a number
of serve breaks and excellent ground strokes from the Paraguayan.
Gonzalez took the first set in just opening 27 minutes of play to get the early advantage in the contest and then carried on her momentum in the following set to seal a straight sets victory. Although she had an ordinary first serve precision of just 48
per cent in the game, Gonzalez secured 18 of 30 points o it en route to victory.
Rohanova hung in the game for quite some time by striking four out of eight serve breaks but had to suffer seven agonising break points from her opponent to finish the contest on the losing end. She had a better serve accuracy of 62 per cent in the matchup
but her seven double faults on crucial moments of the game proved very taxing for her.
The Paraguayan had a blistering start to the opener and broke her rival in the very first game of the match to lead 2-0. Rohanova retaliated very quickly to sting two successive serve breaks to get into lead but went through a sudden slump by dropping serve
twice. Gonzalez reeled off three straight games to seal the opening set at 6-3 and got one up in the contest.
The following set was a complete replication of the first one, with Rohanova breaking serve twice and Gonzalez replying with four cracking break points. The Paraguayan finally reached match point in the ninth game and registered her seventh serve break of
the day to finish off the proceedings at 6-3, getting into the last eight of the Grand Slam tournament.
Gonzalez will face the second seed Caroline Garcia of France in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon Girls’ singles in Friday for a place in the semis.
