Monty Williams upset Anthony Davis was not allowed to travel with team after suffering concussion – NBA News
The New Orleans Hornets made their away trip to Chicago to play against the Chicago Bulls without their number one draft pick from this year’s NBA draft, Anthony Davis. Davis suffered a concussion during the Hornets victory over the Utah Jazz on Friday night when he caught an elbow from teammate Austin Rivers during play. After observation by doctors, he was not cleared to travel with the team for their away game, which did not go down too well with the Hornets coach, Monty Williams.
“When you're dealing with the brain, I guess what's happening in football has impacted everybody. He got touched up a little bit last night. It's just that now they treat everybody like they have white gloves and pink drawers and it's getting old,” said Williams.
Davis wanted to play the game really bad as Chicago is his hometown. He attended Perspectives Charter High School in Chicago before going to the University of Kentucky. However, the doctors did not allow him to travel after examination, and Williams thought that it should be the player’s call whether he wants to travel or not, and if he feels he is healthy enough to travel with the team.
He acknowledged that he suffered several concussions over the course of his basketball career, but was never bound any team doctors over travel.
“I'm not saying I don't like (the policy). We've got to protect the players, but I think the players should have more say so in how they feel. I'm sure I had four or five concussions when I played, and it didn't bother me. The NBA is doing what's necessary to protect the players, but this is not the NFL. You don't get hit in the head that much,” added Williams.
The Hornets were able to secure a comfortable victory over the Bulls even without their starting centre and one of the most important players on the team. However, Williams would have wanted to have his future star with him for a game against a team like Chicago. Hopefully, Davis will be healthy and ready for the next game.
