Mook Jung use in Wing Chun training?

I've trained in Wing Chun on 2 different occasions at 2 different schools, at both we used Mook Jung's on a regular basis. Have visited a couple of Wing Chun schools over the last couple of years and have noticed that they had Mook Jung's, but the arms and legs were either a fairly light weight plastic or were the traditional wooden arms and legs, but covered with padding. I know that many of the traditional methods to condition your weapons have become rather taboo and lots of people don't use them any more. I loved Wing Chun's inside game and used it a lot throughout my fighting career and feel that the conditioning is part of what made it work. Is this a sign of the times that these schools have changed how they use the Mook Jung or do you think it is just a thing with these schools? What are your thoughts about the traditional conditioning methods ?

Just FYI, I have heard that NASA is doing experiments with variations of the old conditioning methods for extended time in space to prevent bone weakening and loss of density.
