How specifically do the moon and the tides relate to each other? Like: how are the waves different when the moon is waxing or waning

  1. The moon cycle is 24hrs. 50.5 minutes. High tide and low tide follow each other every 12hrs. 25 minutes. The tide is 50ft. in the Bay of Fundy New Brunswick.

The first moon cycle is monthly, from full moon to full moon, every 29.53039 days.

The counter-clockwise lunar ellipse takes 31yrs. and a couple of days (depending on leap years) to return to it's same position (relative to the stars). Earth is not the only body exerting it's gravitational pull on the moon at this time. This is due to the eccentricity and the inclination of the moon's orbit. This effect is called libration, or, a wobble.

Most of the energy that manifests itself on the Earth is ultimately derived from solar radiation, with some of it lost through tidal friction.

Atmospheric "tides" affect geo-magnetism and radio field strength. The Earth's crust is affected by the moon. Moscow is estimated to rise and fall by 20 inches due to the moon's gravitational pull.

  2. As we all know the moon rotates around the earth. It is not a perfect circle. It's egg shaped or oblong. When the moon is closer the gravity pulls the water (oceans) harder towards it, bigger tides. As when its farther away .. less gravity pull .. smaller tides. The moon has really nothing to do with waves.. Wind causes waves. What is waxing and waning?

  3. full and new moons are when the moon, sun, and earth are fairly lined up. that should be the maximum daily tidal range. half moons would be minimum daily range, as teh angle is 90 degrees.
