My Dad just got a call that his hunting partner and him both got a bull moose tag (2 bull moose and 1 cow tag). My dad is taking me this year and there is 5 people going i think. My dad is using a 270. win model 70 with a 150 grain, his partner and his partners dad are both using 30-06 with 180 grain. Me and my friend are going out to buy a gun for moose and i was wondering what we should get. I am thinking of getting a 300.wsm browning a-bolt stainless hunter with a nikon 3x-9x, 40 scope. My friend is thinking of getting a 300 ultra mag.remington model 700 sps stainless. Do you think these are good choises. I dont like 30-06 so please dont recommend it for me but my friend likes them. What would you recommend for me and my frined.

  1. Most .30 calibre round are good for moose, the key to picking a round is accessibility. Go with a 30-06 OR .308 you can find them anywhere in Canada, especially in Ontario. Those two are the provinces favorite calibres, besides 30-30

  2. Well i dont know how old you are or how big you are but you both are getting into some pretty big guns there. Since this is your first gun perhaps you should look at a 7mm or maybe a .308 because these guns are a little more versitile if you want to hunt other game like deer or bear. .300wsm and .300 umag with the right bullet will be a canon compared to your dads .270

  3. Those choices are perfectly acceptable for moose hunting, but the ammunition may be a tad expensive. I wouldn't get a stainless steel gun though, just personal preference mostly but they could possibly see the sun glaring off of it. I would say get a basic 4x scope, it is much cheaper but it's still extremely useful at most ranges.

  4. Choices are fine.
