Question:

Moped license in California?

I recently moved to California, and instead of getting a car, I've been thinking about buying a moped. I have my driver's license, but I heard that in some states you have to have an actual motorcycle license in order to drive a moped on the streets. I've been looking at 50cc mopeds, but if I bought a moped that was under 50cc, would I be able to drive it with my regular license? Is there some kind of moped test, and if so, would I be able to go to my local DMV and take it? I really just want to know the basic laws in California for mopeds. I live in Sacramento if that helps. Thanks.
