Question:

Moped wil NOT accelerate, need HELP?? italjet formula air 50

I have an Italjet Formula Air 50, and we have changed the jet in the carb, to a bigger one, and we have replaced the variator rollers, with the same size rollers, but moped will not accelerate properly, takes ages to get moving, but the belt is tight all the time, it doesn't loosen, and the bike always seems to be in drive. Can we adjust this, or the clutch plate? Is it self adjusting?

Cheers Oakie

  1. disconect your exhaust at the engine and try it ( it will be loud )

  2. Sounds like the Variator is not Variatin'.

If all this happened After changing the Rollers,,,

I'd suggest going back thru that & double check everything.

    If the Variator is OK,,,

    Check the Rear Clutch.

The 2 "pulley" halves slide together wider or narrower to control the "gear ratio"

Occasionaly they'll get stuck in what is the "Hi Gear" position.

So it acts exactly like what You are describing as far as Sluggish Acceleration.

When the Clutch Sticks in "High Gear",,,,,it is at it's WIDEST.

    Which makes the Belt LOOSE.

When Belt is TIGHT,,,and it seems stuck in Drive all the time,,,

That is Usually the Variator Pully Stuck too close together.

Which makes it be in Drive mode,,,and tightens the belt because it is effectively a Larger Diameter pulley.

    I'd bet it's a Variator Prob

    Good Luck

  3. hi m8. I deal with this a lot. There definitely is no real answer to this until you have sorted it , believe me..

You need to tell the engine to move by excelerating, so check the cable that runs to the ;carb, make sure the spring in the carb moves up&down when you excelerate. also check the excelerating handle, by taking it off handle bar and open handle by unscrew it. make sure the cable runs ok wen trying to excelerate, if it sticks theres your prob or on the carb there's your prob.

if all ok you have a fuel Blockage. check the jets again and again. make sure your exhauste is not blocked by putting hand over the end or taking the exhausted  off and trying to excelerate.

if not that try the belt area, make sure belt is not so tight it stops its cogs moving.

if not make sure therz compression by putting thumb over spark plug hole, without plug in, and try and start it. if compression your thumb will been blown away. dont put your thumb to far in, just over it. I doubt itl be the compression very much.

I rekon its carb or cable.

    if it never worked

after you replaced jets, ur jets are the prob. buy jets for that bike.

  4. Does the engine rev and the scoot not move?

    Change the clutch shoes.

If the engine won't rev - clogged exhaust (if 2 stroke)

OR needs a top end rebuild (cylinder, piston & rings).

2 stroke engines require rebuilds quite often.

  5. I would double check the carb, maybe buy some of the engine cleaning material and run it through, sound like you have a fuel blockage somewhere.
