I am about to purchase a moped in mallorca, and am wondering, does anyone know the policies on this? what sorts of lessons will i need, what licenses? i just know they are quite relaxed about it there, but I have had no previous motorcycle experience so any information would be appreciated.

  1. First, what's your nationality?

Since Mallorca IS part of Spain, you need a Spanish drivers license to operate a moped/moto on Spanish streets and highways. But having said that, the place where you buy your moped may not require you to HAVE a drivers license in order to buy it - but it's your responsibility to get have/get a drivers license and put license plates for your moped. Oh, and you have to wear a helmet too.

If you don't already have a Spanish drivers license, I can tell you it's not easy. You have to pay an academy to take the classes, then take the test and the (car). All this will be done in Spanish so you'll have to know Spanish beforehand.

Depending on the size of the engine, if it's smaller and you have the Spanish drivers license, you won't need special tests or special drivers license. But if you have a larger engine or a motorcycle you'll need special classes/license.

  2. If you already have a full UK car licence you do not need to take any further tests. You should however exchange your UK licence for a Spanish one after living in Spain for 6 months. In order to get insurance it is possible that the insurer makes you change the licence just to take out a policy with them (this isn't a legal thing, just standard practise for many insurers).

I personally would say that as long as you have a UK licence and can get insurance then don't worry. Do you really think the Spanish police can be bothered to try to prove that you've lived there for more than 6 months in order to prosecute you ? As an added advantage if you do get caught doing anything wrong, the Spanish system isn't yet advanced enough to get the points put onto your UK licence, another good reason for not swapping it for a Spanish one !

Another thing to bear in mind is that as of this year mopeds (ciclomotores) also need to pass the ITV, they were previously exempt.

  3. the best thing to do is go to your nearest driving school and ask there. You do not need a car driving licence just for a moped as they can drive them at 15.
