More Police & Private eye questions...about their relationship to each other?

I got a great answer for my last Q from Trooper...I am now wondering...if a Private I. was looking for a missing person...I mean a NEW case...say where the police had failed..or the family wanted more help....would the Police resent that? Especially if the P.I. wasn't an ex cop? This is research for a script...

they could hire outside help if they wanted but the police will keep looking till they cant find anything for a while and it becomes a cold case.....

Not necessarily, but they probably would get the hump if the P.I. kept getting in the way...
