More Than Love leave it late to go past Starship Flare in a 1 mile thriller to win the Miesque Stakes
Right after breaking her maiden, the 2-year-old John P.Terranova II trained More Than Love made her stakes debut in the Grade 3 $100,000 Miesque Stakes and the juvenile filly stood out after an eye catching performance to sweep the field with an emphatic win by a whisker.
The even money choice, More Than Love ran her heart out to catch the stubborn pace setter Starship Flare, who was sent off as the 29 to 1 favourite.
At one point it looked as if Starship Flare is going to go through and through to register a supreme wire to wire win in the Miesque, but More Than Love had other plans and with some little urging from Ramon Dominguez, who hasn’t made a single wrong turn the whole season, knew that More Than Love had a lot in the tank to go past Starship Flare.
With all in reserve, More Than Love was willing to burn it out at all cost to catch the loose pace setter and overhaul her, and with her determined run More Than Love was able to achieve it by a mere nose to win a superb race, which will be remembered throughout her racing career.
Newtown Anner Stud Farm owned, Kentucky bred daughter of More Than Ready, out of mare I’m In Love by Zafonic, More Than Love tried her luck in her first attempt to break her maiden but failed to do so when she finished fourth at Belmont Park under John Velasquez going at a distance of a mile.
Second time she was luck, as she ran a perfect race to win over a stretched out distance of 1 1/16 miles at Belmont Park this time under Corey Nakatani on 9 October, 2011, defeating the second placed Party of Interest and Conquesta who followed in third with the winning time of 1 minute and 43.67 seconds.
The final time of the Grade 3 Miesque Stakes was 1 minute and 36.32 seconds over a distance of a mile as, Starship Flare dug it out and rallied hard only to weaken close to the wire in second place and Island Paradise to finish third.
